The player takes on the role of the main protagonist of the series, Mario. Mario's younger brother, Luigi, is only playable by the second player in the game's multiplayer mode and assumes the same plot role and functionality as Mario. The objective is to race through the Mushroom Kingdom, survive the main antagonist Bowser's forces, and save Princess Toadstool. The player moves from the left side of the screen to the right side in order to reach the flag pole at the end of each level.

Since the game is based on Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, it has little in common with the original Super Mario Bros. For example, in order to defeat enemies, the player needs to pluck blades of grass to receive items (such as vegetables), and then throw the vegetables at them. It's also possible to defeat enemies by jumping on them, picking them up and then throwing them to other enemies. There are a few elements in common with its predecessor, however. Many power-ups are similar to that in Super Mario Bros., such as the Mushroom, although it has a different function; the Small Heart replaces the Mushroom.

Contra
It is set in an unnamed island somewhere in South America, which has been taken over by a terrorist organisation, who have set up a top-secret base on the island, from where they plan on - you guessed it - taking over the world (of course!). Depending on how many players are playing the game, one or two good guys are sent to infiltrate the base, take them down, and save the world. In Contra, you control military commandos Bill “Mad Dog” Rizer and Lance “Scorpion” Bean, or in Probotector, two cyborg beings that specialise in counter-terrorism and gun use. Despite the change of characters between versions, the rest of the game is virtually identical and shares the same common objective: guide these guys through eight stages and blast away anything that moves in your bid to stop the terrorists.

Contra Force
Contra Force is an NES game developed by Konami. It was never released in Japan but was intended to be its own game and series named Arc Hound. The Contra brand name was tacked on to attract more sales. When Contra III: The Alien Wars was made the title "Contra 4" was considered but Konami decided not to count this game as a true Contra.
